Probably the Buddha was tall, evenfor the North-west of India, where the average of a mansstature is about five feet eight or nine inches. As to the attitudes of Gautamas images, theymay be classed under the three heads of sedent, erect, and recumbent. I use the wwd sedent for whatought to be called a squatting position, with the legsfolded under the body. Images which represent afigure sitting in European fiishion are rare. Four principal images represent the four principalevents in Buddhas life, as shown in the Sarnath sculp-ture engraved on the opposite page (compare p. ;^Sy). The first sedent attitude may be called the Medi-tative. The example below is described at p. xxx. This represents the Buddha seated, in meditation, 478 IMAGES AND IDOLS. on a raised seat under the sacred tree, with the twohands supinated, one over the other. Tlie second sedent attitude may be called the Witness-attitude, It is perhaps the most esteemed ofall, and is represented in a good sculpture delineatedbelov/ (from Sir A.
