The design (see illustration No. 22) is composed of a borderof vine leaves and grapes, set off by a background of finepointilM work, the grapes being represented by amethysts,of which there are 256, each cluster being set in gold and letinto the cover. This border is surrounded by delicate strap-work, intertwined at the corners, and inlaid in brownmorocco. The centre panel is composed of a conventionaltreatment of roses and leaves on a blue background, theroses being inlaid in pink, and the whole surrounded bystrapwork inlaid in light brown. The doublures (see illustration No. 23) have a borderof intricate design, with a background of fine pointilld,enclosed by four lines of strapwork inlaid in black; thewhole surrounds another border of Oriental design, inlaidin green morocco.
