NEW GROWTHS 261 True cervical myomata are quite uncommon, but their occurrence is apt tobe serious. They do not have the same latitude of growth as do myomata ofthe body, so that they cause pressure symptoms comparatively early. Theymay almost completely fill the lower part of the pelvis, obstructing the bladderand rectum. On account of their location extirpation is difficult and danger-ous. Degeneration of Myomata.—Uterine myomata are prone to numerous formsof degeneration, most of which are the result of the inadequate blood-supplythat usually characterizes these tumors. ouY>m\jCooS Fig. 79.—Pedunculated Submucous Myoma Extruding from the External Os. Hyaline Degeneration.—This form of degeneration occurs in some part ofnearly all fibroids. Its significance is only microscopic and is of no specialclinical importance. Changes Due to Passive Congestion.—In this condition the tumor becomescharged to a greater or less extent with the watery constituents of the forms are distinguished—edematous, myxomatous, and cystic. In the edematous form the tumor becomes larger and softer as a result of 262 GYNECOLOGY the. serous exudate from obstructed venous circulation. This may result fromtorsion of a pedunculated fibroid or from torsion of the entire myomatous
