Engineers grinding replacement track components after using thermite welding on London Underground rail track, London, UK

Engineers weld replacement track components together in a tunnel using thermite welding on London Underground rail track, London, UK London Underground engineers use "Thermite" welding unit placed on the top of a Train track using sheer heat to melt a small amount of steel and the two lines of steel rail it needs to join, the extreme heat produced melts both track ends and a small amount of added steel to produce a perfect weld between both lines which can be ground off to produce a perfect joint. Using clay molds and pans either side to collect any excess material produced or "boiled"off during the weld.
