Justinian I (483-565) ruled as Byzantine emperor from 527 to 565. His reign was the rebirth of imperial greatness. His generals recovered Africa from the Vandals and Italy from the Ostrogoths. He had the church of the Hagia Sophia built. He called the Second Council of Constantinople in 553. The illustration dates to 1882.
