Sometimes the market would fall and for a long time the contract price would be above the spot price, in which case some far- sighted coal men would voluntarily credit the florist with a rebate, but not all coal dealers are far-sighted. On the other hand, the market might rise; then if deliveries came along all right, the florist at least was happy, but if they didn't come there was a strong reason for not making a contract next season, or at least making it with another source of supply. Anyway, the average florist has come to look upon the usual form of coal contract as something for the coal man to hold the florist on and as affording absolutely no j^rotection in the event of labor or railroad troubles or an advancing market. On the other hand, the average coal man has come to look upon a contract with a florist as merely an agreement on the part of the greenhouse man to use a certain <!oal for the season at the market price ^P to a certain linlit, that limit being the price named in the contract. Of course there are exceptions, some con- tracts being fulfilled to the letter just as though they were backed by bonds, hut the circumstances show why neither the florist nor the fuel man looks on the present form of contract with high favor and why both parties are coming to prefer to deal on the basis of market prices, trusting to square dealing to get square treatment. There is also the further fact that after a contract has been made the coal man sometimes finds himself unable to <ieliver at all times the quality con- tracted for. If he
