Thestars on the Stacye plate may have represented thisfamily or the family of Whittington who resided nearbyand are credited by Burke with these arms, but as neitherof these names is found on the Stacye pedigree which isgiven in detail in Hunters Hallamshire (copy in His-torical Society Library, Philadelphia), it is possible thatthis plate, combining the old Stacye arms, a f esse betweenthree birds, with the three fleurs de lis and crest of theElys of Utterby, together with the three stars of Han-sard, represented the intermarriage of the Stacyes andElyes in the 17th century. A tankard bearing a largefleur de lis, Mr. Stacye stated, was of unknown origin orownership. Another curious relic in the collection of Mr. Stacyewas a solid gold heart-shaped pendant engravedwith the letters R. C. 5° Sept. 1712 on one side and A VISIT TO BALLIFIELD. 133. on the other **Amico Tuoopt Thomas Stacye de Balli-field. Translated Thybest friend Thomas Stacyeof Ballifield. This had been presentedto Tliomas Stacye by RobertCarver of Dinnington Stacye, who seemed tobe well-informed on local family history, stated that thefamily of Carver was an excellent one, and also referredto the Elyes in terms of the greatest respect. Mr. Stacyeowned a fine miniature of John Stacye of Ballifield, 1760,reproduced herein, also letters written to this ancestorby his cousins in West Jersey, which are given in walked together as far as his church, on my way backto Sheffield.
