Ryde, an Oxford first-class man,was appointed to the sole incumbency. held office until 27th July, 1855, whenhe resigned in order to obtain a less labori-ous charge, and for other private successor was found in the person of theRev. The building was opened forworship on 27th July, 1817, but, in conse-quence of the heavy debt incurred in itserection, it could not then be original cost of the church was about£8000, of which only about £3000 was paid,leaving a debt of £5000, which it took over40 years to liquidate. In 1858 the debtwas cleared off, and steps were taken forpurchasing the feu-duty and raising other£300 for the improvement of the interiorof the church. These projects having beensuccessfully accomplished, the consecrationof the church took place on Tuesda
