Ballerina sculpture by Gradimir Aleksić, Budva, Montenegro

This popular symbol of Budva, the “Budva Ballerina” (or gymnast!) is the work of the Belgrade sculptor Gradimir Aleksić, Aleksić's sculpture was inspired by an old local myth about a girl who was engaged to a sailor, who sailed away on a long voyage to earn money so the two could marry. He never returned, but the girl remained faithful to him and came to this rock every morning to watch the sea. She had been waiting for him for years until one morning she was found dead on the rock where the famous statue is located today.
