Lymphatic filariasis life cycle. Diagram showing the life cycle of the parasitic nematode (roundworm) Wuchereria bancrofti, one of the causes of lymphatic filariasis. The worm is transmitted to humans via mosquito bites. The microfilaria stage of the worm lodges in and blocks the lymph nodes that drain to the lower extremities causing elephantiasis, the massive enlargement and deformity of the legs and genitalia.
