Onychogryphosis or abnormal growth of toenail. View of an abnormally thickened and deformed big toenail in an adult. The cause of onychogryphosis is unknown, but is associated with poor circulation or with a fungal infection. Onychogryphosis is usually seen in elderly people and can affect the fingernails as well as the toenails. The thickening and overgrowth of the nails is said to represent the claws of a mythological beast - the Griffin.
