ENERAL WILLIAM HUGH YOUNG,was born in Booneville, Mo., on the 1st ofJanuary, 1838. General Young was rearedin Red River and Grayson counties. Hisearly education was liberal and was obtainedat Washington College, Tennessee; Mc-Kenzie College, Texas, and the Universityof Virginia, from which institution he grad-uated in 1861. The civil war havingbegun, he remained and studied militarytactics at the university, which had been turned intoIn September, 1861, he returned to Grayson county,Texas, and raised a company of men for the Confederate army. He wascommissioned captain, and with his company was assigned for dutywith the Ninth Texas infantry. He was in the service throughout thewar, seeing duty principally with the army of Tennessee. He wasan active participant in the great battles of Shiloh, Corinth, Perryville, a militarv institute. Murfreesboro, ChickamaiShiloh he was made coloi1864 he was made brigad,war.
