Hansen (1908a) arrived at the conclusion that the Challenger specimens attributed to B. scyphops were in reality different from that species and he renamed them B. distinguenda, without reference, apparently, to the history of the species. It is true that Willemoes-Suhm did not publish any de- scription of the species to which he gave the name Petal ophthalmus inermis, and it would, perhaps, be legitimate to ignore his name as a nomen nudum. In my view, however, since it is possible to identify.
