From this instance seamen may learn never todespair. This ship sailed from Savannah for Liverpool, December16, 1818. The following is an extract from her log-book. Saturday, Dec. 27, 1818. These twenty-four hourscommence with fresh breezes and squally; at two, P. M.,our mainmast was struck with lightning; in about tenminutes, found the ship to be on fire ; called all hands,took in all sail but the close-reefed maintopsail, and laidthe ship to, with her head to the south; all hands nowemployed clearing out the steerage, if possible, to get atthe fire ; got up the small bower cable, and many otherthings, in order to break out cotton, which we found verydifficult to do. At three oclock, sent a man aloft to lookout, who returned in a few minutes and saw nothing; wethen commenced to hoist out cotton on deck.
