The murder of his father and brother, and alsothat of the chief of the Montgomeries, Hugli, fourth Eai-1 of Eglinton,gave him half the families of the district as subjects for his revenge. To FOURTH PERIOD 196 THE MONTGOMERY MONUMENT the fulfilment of this object he seems to have devoted the strength of hismanhood, but in later years he is said to have suffered extreme remorse
