The delay between its peak and the start of the third-order event is approximately 1 ms and represents synaptic delay at the giant synapse. This characteristic short-latency pattern of activity in the stel- late ganglion was consistently observed in adults (Fig. 4A), hatchlings (Fig. 4B), and embryos (Fig. 6A) only when stimuli were applied directly over the magnocellular lobe. When the squid is stimulated by a light flash (Fig. 5A, B) or by electrical shocks in regions other than the immediate vicinity of the first-order giant cells, , the tentacles (Fig. 5C, D), 'indirect' responses are obtained.
