During other seasons, the disease can scarcely be found. If the cankers are not too numerous or too large, they may be cut out, with care to remove all the diseased tissue and disinfect the tools and cuts with the mercuric disinfectant used in pear-blight work (p. 159). Dead or nearly dead limbs should be cut off and dead or badly crippled trees removed. Wounds should be covered with bordeaux paste (p. 157). Whitewashing the trunks of young trees in the fall may prevent some of the infection which develops abundantly during the winter in certain years.
