The rapid development of street railways in the United Stateshas created a demand for a new class of repair shops. While alloperating roads have facilities for making nearly all of the ordi-nary repairs which are necessary under normal conditions, thereare often times when these facilities are stretched beyond theirlimit and it becomes necessary to find some reliable firm to whichthe apparatus of the company can be intrusted. On the otherhand, there are many parts of the electrical equipment which it isinconvenient and unnecessarily expensive to manufacture by theroad itself, such as armature coils, field coils and many other de-tails. The reliability of this part of the apparatus is of the utmostimportance, as all railway engineers know, and if obtained froman irresponsible source it invariably leads to trouble.
