Signposts at the start of Churchill Barrier No1 leading from the Orkney mainland to the island of Lamb Holm in Scapa Flow.

Churchill Barrier No 1 connects the mainland and the small island of Lamb Holm, Orkney Scotland. The four barriers were constructed during the second world war on the orders of Winston Churchill to protect shipping in the famous natural harbour of Scapa Flow from German U boats. The barriers were only completed in 1945 just in time for the end of the war. However they proved to be ideal for use as causeways connecting together the southern isles of Orkney.
