About 1785 he began to study law at Salisbury, N. 1788 removed to Nashville, Tenn., where he began to practice 1791 he married Rachel Robards, originally Rachel Donelson,whose first husband was living and had taken preliminary measures toobtain a divorce, which was legally completed in 1793. The marriageceremony was again performed in 1794. He was a member of the con-vention which framed the constitution of Tennessee
