Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), British poet and author. Kipling was born in India, brought to England by his family when he was five years old. He wrote classics of children's literature, as well as poetry and short stories. His works were extremely popular, with the subject often being some aspect of the British Empire. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907. He declined both a knighthood and the position of Poet Laureate. Following World War I in which his son died, he was appointed literary advisor for the Imperial War Graves Commission. Following his death, his ashes were interred in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey. Photographed circa 1899.
