Liebig's research in the field of agricultural chemistry marked a new period in the history of agriculture. The German farmers, to whom he gave the means of preserving unchanged the fertility of the soil, showed their gratitude by a rich gift of honor, which Liebig designated for a foundation for the promotion of arable science.
