However, former President Lech Walesa was not in attendance due to the political infighting and accusations that have been directed at him from the current governing party. On August 31,1980, the historical agreement between the communist authorities and the Inter-factory Strike Committee (MKS) was signed, paving the way for the creation of the first independent trade union in the communist bloc known as NSZZ Solidarnosc.
