As Mr. Warrens house was to be built on a cornerlot, this peculiarity of position became very conspicu-ous, and required to be considered with some care,when preparing the plans, so as to avoid a stilted, 212 VILLAS AND COTTAGES. disagreeable effect. The entrance front of the housefaces on Montgomery Street, and is seen in the ordi-nary way on a level with the street. The design istherefore made with gables accordingly. The rear,on the other hand, is conspicuous, chiefly from thelower streets and from the river; and as it provides abasement story entirely out of ground, on account ofthe rapid descent of the hill, the whole front is, inconsequence, of an altered proportion, and required adifferent treatment. The roof in this part of the de-sign is hipped back, without gables, as will be seen onthe lower view, and dormer-windows are introducedto give light to the attic bedrooms.
