He died in New York city Dec. 17, , Thomas Alfred, soldier and civil en-gineer, was born at Black Lake, St. Lawrence county,N. Y., Dec. 3,1809, the youngest child of Thomas Johnand Ruth (Foote) Davies. His youth, up to the age ofsixteen years, was passed on his fathers farm. Hethen secured an appointment as a cadet in the U. academy at West Point, which institution heentered July 1, 1835, and after completing the fullcourse, was graduated in 1829, and was at once com-missioned as brevet second lieutenant of the 1st regi-ment of infantry, U. 8. army. He served for one yearwith this rank at Fort Crawford, in what was then theterritory of Wisconsin, at that time considered to beon the extreme western frontier of the United States,and was subsequently ordered to West Point, where.
