Thecontinuation of the astragal between one column andthe other, gives a finish to the horizontal architrave,that produces a good effect. The door of S. Lorenzo, in Damaso, pis. 43 and44, may be considered as forming the principalentrance of an edifice, and is a valuable model of itskind. All its proportions are well preserved, andin good relation with each other; and it is susceptibleof being enriched by the application of ornaments toits mouldings, according to the character of the edificeto which it is intended to be applied.
