A stained glass window by Frederick Preedy depicting The Crucifixion of Jesus, All Saints Church, Church Lench, Worcestershire
Frederick Preedy (1820-1898) was both an architect and a stained glass artist. He was born at Offenham, near Evesham in Worcestershire. He trained as an architect under the tuition of Harvey Edington. When Edington died in 1849 Preedy set up his own practice in Worcester, later, in 1860 moving to London. He was greatly influenced by William Butterfield, another of the Victorian Gothic Revivalist architects who commissioned Preedy to execute a number of stained glass windows for his new churches. Preedy’s early window designs were manufactured by George Rogers of Worcester, but he soon became disillusioned with the quality of Rogers’ work and set up his own manufacturing facilities. His stained glass work has been recorded in more than 100 churches around Britain, and he also took commissions from the colonies. His church designs were mostly in the style of the early 14th century, but have been described as, “run-of-the-mill” by some, and he could be very unsympathetic to medieval churches which he was want to sweep away entirely in favour of the new.
