View NNE of Culver Hole Medieval/Post-Medieval pigeon house: a 60-foot-high mortared limestone wall with open doorways & windows built across a sea cave/rock cleft to the W of Port-Eynon Point, Gower, Wales, UK. Inside there are rectangular nesting boxes for 100s of pigeons in c 30 tiers with rough stairs linking the various levels. Culver (from Old English culfre) means a pigeon or dove. In 1850 a local curate found mammoth bones & a skull too large to remove from the cave. Local legends describe the cave as a refuge/hermit cell for Prince Eynon after his defeat in battle, and as a pirate lair for smuggler John Lucas who is said to have lived in the fortified Salt House at Port Eynon & constructed a secret passage between the two.
