The last bastion of the once feared Al-Qaeda-affiliated extremist group Al Shabaab, Kismayo fell after troops of the Somali National Army (SNA) and the Ras Kimboni Brigade milita supported by the Kenyan Contingent of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) entered the port city on 02 October following a two month operation across southern Somalia which saw the liberation of villages and centres along a distance of 120km from Afmadow to Kismayo.
