Plaster cast of a citizen of Pompeii buried alive by volcanic ash

This individual was buried alive by the eruption of Vesuvius. In time the decomposition of the soft tissues left behind a cavity in the hardened volcanic ash, though the skeleton remained intact. archaeologists excavating the site were able to pour plaster of Paris into the cavity and form a cast of the body. From the visible part of the skull it can be seen that the coronal suture is partially fused and the superior orbital margin is sharp, without a ridge. This suggests that this is the body of a young woman in her thirties.
