A child dressed in traditional clothes at the festival of Gai Jatra, the procession of cows in Kathmandu. Every family who has lost one relative in the past year participates in this procession through the streets of Kathmandu leading a cow. If a cow is unavailable then a young boy dressed as a cow is considered a fair substitute. The festival celebrated in the Nepalese month of Vadra from August-September has its roots in the Hindu religious belief that a cow revered as a holy animal will help the deceased’s journey to heaven.
