Duke and Lovell. US astronauts Charles 'Charlie' Moss Duke (left, born 1935) and James 'Jim' Arthur Lovell (right, born 1928). Duke's only mission was as lunar module pilot for Apollo 16. During this mission he spent just under three days on the surface of the Moon in April 1972. Lovell flew on Gemini 7 and Gemini 12 (1965 and 1966), and then Apollo 8, the first mission to orbit the Moon (December 1968). He was the commander of the Apollo 13 mission (April 1970) that suffered a near-fatal mishap on its way to the Moon, before returning safely. Photographed in June 2011, at the Starmus Festival, the Canary Islands.
