He was town clerk from 1856until 1861, when he resigned to enter 288 NORWICH UNIVERSITY. [1838 the quartermasters department, U. S. Volunteers, under Gen. P. P. Pitkin, asassistant quartermaster. He was unable to enlist in the service, owing to hisdeafness, yet served with distinction doing all the duties of a soldier until
