Mistress and her maid, oil-jug painting.
Re-projected painting from a white-ground oil-jug, lekythos, painted with an image of an Athenian citizens wife handing a bundle of red clothing to her maid, shown with cropped hair to indicate her servile status. Scenes of domestic life are often tenderly recorded on such vessels as this, that were often made for the tomb. Attributed to the Achilles painter, made in Athens around 400-450BC. The lekythos was used for anointing unmarried women's dead bodies, and many lekythoi are found in tombs. The images on lekythoi were often depictions of daily activities or rituals. Because they are so often used in funerals, they may also depict funerary rites, a scene of loss, or a sense of departure and were a form of funerary art. British Museum.
