The form shown in Fig. 85 is made with an opening a< the topfor the entrance of water, and at the bottom for its discharge, thusinsuring a supply of hot water at the top and of colder water at thebottom. Some hot-water radiators are made with a cross-partition soarranged that all water entering passes at once to the top from whichit may take any passage toward the outlet. Fig. 86 is the morecommon form of radiator, and is made with continuous passages attop and bottom, the hot water being supplied at one side and drawnoff at the other. The action of gravity is depended upon for makingthe hot and lighter water pass to the top, and the colder water sink. 109 100 HEATING AND VENTILATION i,i the bottom and How off through the return. Hot-water radiatorsarc usually tapped and plugged so that the pipe connections can hemade cither at the top or at the bottom. This is shown in Fig. 87. Wall radiators are adapted to hot-water as well as steam heating. Efficiency of Radiators. The efficiency of a hot-water radiatordepends entirely upon the temperature at which the water is circu-lated. The besl practical results arc obtained with the water leavingthe boiler at a maximum temperature of about ISO degrees in zeroweather and returning at aboul 160 degrees; this gives an average
