Seattle's Gas Works Park is the former home of a gas manufacturing plant and affords wonderful views of Lake Union and the city. The land was initially cleared in 1906 to build a facility to produce gas from coal and then later crude oil. The plant was made obsolete in the 1950's as a result of the import of sufficient quantities of natural gas and in 1975 the site was opened for the first time as a park.
