Hearing ofthe approach of James with 20,000 men, they fled to Eng-land, whence they returned in October 1585, with a largeforce, and having laid siege to Stirling castle, succeeded inobtaining possession of it and of the kings person. On thisoccasion, Colonel Stuart, who had been directed to defendthe street at the west port of the town, had a narrow fiercely assaulted he fled to the castle, but was fol-lowed, and overtaken by James Haldane, brother of the lairdof Gleneagles, who, as he was laying hands upon him,
