This possibility can, however, be greatly minimized by culti-vating the habit of making a systematicinspection, starting at the step on theleft side of engine and passing aroundand under the engine back to the start-ing point. This should be done alwaysin exactly the same manner, so that nopart will be missed, special attentionbeing paid to gland nuts, slide bar studs, big end and eccentric bolts and setscrews, quadrant block pins, split pinsin Virake gear, cowcatcher and ash ar-. This pin carries one or more smallsemaphore-shaped blades C, which nor-mally lie upon the rest a, as shown in theengravings, and are in a horizontal posi-tion. The one marked B. O. (indicatingbad order), is of such a length that, when the push rod has been moved out8 in. it will drop down into a verticalposition, as shown by the small semaphoreat b. When two or more semaphores areused one is of such length that it willdrop to a vertical position, as at c, whenthe push rod has moved out 7 in. Thiswill indicate to the inspector that thetravel is approaching 8 in. and may reachit before the train arrives at the end ofits run.
