A vintage 33-1/3 RPM vinyl record and its album cover with the 1940s hit song "When the Swallows Come Back to Capistrano" tells of birds returning to nest every year at Mission San Juan Capistrano in Orange County, California, USA. Songwriter Leon Rene was inspired by the legend of cliff swallows faithfully coming back from South America every springtime to their mud nests at the mission. The swallows became a tourist attraction for decades until recent years when the birds disappeared because open fields where they caught insects for their diet were covered up by urban sprawl.

The swallows became a tourist attraction for decades until recent years when the birds disappeared because open fields where they caught insects for their diet were covered up by urban sprawl. The swallow song was performed by many recording artists and sold over 3 million copies. This record with the original version sung by its composer was purchased in the 1960s in a gift shop at the historical Capistrano mission, which was founded by famed Spanish missionary Junipero Serra in 1776.
