Blue sky view, looking east from B6114 Saddleworth Road, Deadhead and Scammonden Reservoirs in snowy South Pennine landscape, Kirklees, West Yorkshire

The winter of 2010-2011 included the UK's coldest December since Met Office Records began in 1910. The mean December 2010 temperature in the UK was minus one degree Celsius. In some places the temperature reached minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees F). Late November to Boxing Day 2010 experienced two spells of severe winter weather with very low temperatures and significant snowfall. The first spells lasted two weeks from Thursday, 25 November to Thursday, 9 December. The UK was under the influence of a prolonged north-easterly airstream drawing bitterly cold air from Northern Europe and Siberia. Snowy moorland landscape view, looking east from the B6114 Saddleworth Road, of the Deadhead and Scamonden Reservoirs, South Pennines, Kirklees, West Yorkshire. Deadhead Reservoir, built 1838-39, was originally constructed to supply water to the textile mills in the Blackburn Valley, downstream of the Reservoir. The reservoir was named after the local settlement of Dean Head, most of which was submerged by its construction. Scammonden reservoir, downstream, was opened in 1971. The M62 crosses the dam of Scammonden Water.
