Well, his heart is just nowrather under the influence of the retardator nerves, for the monkeys have been making so much of aracket in enacting sham fights and firing theirminiature guns, that Mrs. Hubbs has given Sammynotice to take both of them home with him thisevening. Poor Jim (the black cat) has nearlylost an eye by their carelessness. All the hairhas been burned off from the left side of his headby a blast of powder which came from one ofthe guns that accidentally went off in the handsof Sponsie Number 2. That side of the poor catsface is swollen and the eye completely closed, 2O6 THE BOY DOCTOR AND so that he looks queerly enough. Bridget was soenraged that she boxed the monkeys ears severelywith a hand right out of the flour-barrel, from whichshe was filling the bread-bowl for the purpose ofmaking biscuits just as the accident took A SCENE IN THE KITCHEN. Badly as the two animals feel with their retarda-tors in full activity, it would thrill your accelera-tor nerves and make you laugh in spite of yonrsympathies to see them. Jim looks wildly withhis remaining eye at Sponsie Number 2, and the THE TROUBLESOME MONKEY. 2OJ latter stares from under his flour-crested eyebrowsat Jim with a good deal of that same restlesssurprise that the young folks viewed each otherin the masks at the Biddlewicker party. SponsieNumber I is gazing sadly upon both. I havetried to give you a picture of the scene, but theartist cannot portray the emotions which thrilledthe nerves of Jim and Sponsie Number 2, norcan he pencil the singular activity which must ofnecessity be going on in the pneumogastric nervesof all the animals, Sponsie Number I attempt to do so would be like trying to pho-tograph a mosquito on the wing and reproducein the pic
