Ruins of the acropolis of Metropolis ancient site in Izmir province of Turkey. The fortification walls were built during the Hellenistic period. Metropolis was founded during the Early Bronze Age, about 5,000 years ago. During the Hellenistic period, the city was fortified with impressive walls, while during the Roman period trade was among the main sources of income in the city that was located on the road between Ephesus and Smyrna.
