Toad spawn (left) and frog spawn (Right). Toad spawn is laid in long strings, but frog spawn in clumps.

Two of the most widespread amphibians in the UK are the common toad (Bufo bufo) and the common or grass frog (Rana temporaria). Typically frogs lay their eggs earlier than toads, and often in smaller ponds. Frogs may choose any small pond, but toads will gather at a single, traditional pond from a large distance away. Sometimes, as here, they will lay in the same pond. Toads lay their eggs in a long string, often interwoven with the pond vegetation. Common frogs lay their eggs in clumps, as seen in the right of the picture.
