The Library of the New England Historic-Genealogical Societycontains about 25,000 volumes and 70,000 pamphlets. It is located inthe rooms of the society, at 18 Somerset Street, just below AshburtonPlace. The library and archives of the society are freely open to thepublic, and are much utilized by persons hunting up their genealogies. The Natural History Museum Library, in the building of theBoston Natural History Society, Boylston Street, corner of BerJceleycontains over 126 HANDY GUIDE TO BOSTON. The State Library of Massachusetts occuiDies quarters in theState House. It is composed largely of volumes of statutes of thedifferent States, Territories, and the United States; the acts of theBritish Parliament, and the French Archives Parlimentaires; and italso contains valuable legal documents, law reports, v^^orks on politi-cal economy, education, and social science. The number of volumesis over 10,000. The library is open daily for the use of the Governorand other officers of the State, members of the Legislature, and thegeneral public, under certain conditions. All persons may use itfor consultation or reference. Its conduct is under the direction of aboard of trustees. The Social Law Library is in the court house, on Court was incorjjorated in 1814, and contains 20,000 law books.
