Originallythe brick was simply laid upon the earth road bed; but as in thecase of the granite block pavements, such a foundation did notprove to be firm enough, and the pavement settled, unequally, andecon attained a very unsatisfactory sonditicn. Brick pavementsare now constructed in the same manner as are granite blocV. pave-ments, and most of the. principles of the latter may be applied tobrick pavements.
