Thetubes give a heating surface of 1,310square feet, the firebox 118 square feet, making a total heating surface of 1,428square feet. The grate area is squarefeet. Krupp crucible tires are used: United No. 8. exhaust pipe. The exhaust pipe is ratherlow, being 21 % inches above the bottomof the smoke-box. Between the nozzleand the opening to the smoke-stack thereare two lift pipes, the lower one being 10inches diameter and the upper one 13inches diameter. The top of the latter isalmost on a level with the opening of thestack. Mr. Atkinson, writing to us about. FIRST COMPOUND LOCOMOTIVE BUILT IN CANADA. ada. The compound feature of the engineis the same as used by the PittsburgLocomotive Works, which was illustratedin Locomotive Engineering in Febru-ary, 1894. The cylinders of this engine are 19 and29x24 inches; the driving wheels are 62inches diameter outside of tires. States metallic packing; Richardson safetyvalves: Westinghouse air brakes and sig-nals; Nathan lubricators: Gresham &Craven injectors; Crosby gages, andLeachs sander. The arrangement of the smoke-box inthis engine is rather peculiar, the baffleplate being placed in the front of the this arrangement of smoke-stack, says, that it works very well and enables themto keep the smoke-box clear of cinderswithout spark hopper or side hole, and atthe same time the engine throws fewersparks than ever they had before, and thesteaming qualities are extremely satisfac-torv. even with fine coal.
