The diagnosis in such cases maysometimes be confirmed by feeling with the finger in the rectum theragged orifice through which the communication between the cavityand the bowel is kept up. In complete anal fistules the rectal open-ing is usually within an inch of the anus, but the pus secreting pouchor pocket situated in the ischio-rectal space may extend to a higherpoint than this on the outside of the rectum.
