Sarychev volcano, ISS image. Image taken by astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) of Sarychev volcano on the Kuril Islands, Russia. A large plume of smoke, steam and ash is erupting from the volcano while pyroclastic flow of denser ash descends the volcano sides. It is thought that the eruption has caused a hole to form in the cloud layer above it (centre). Photographed on the 12th June 2009 from the International Space Station (ISS) by an Expedition 20 crew member.
