In Fig. 91 is shown an improved form of a steam separatorwhich consists of a shell or casing in which there is firmlysecured a double-ended cone. On this cone there are cast anumber of wings, extending spirally along its exterior. Onentering the separator the steam is spread and thrown outwardby the cone and given a centrifugal motion by the spiral wings are constructed with a curved surface. It will be noticed that the steam on entering the separator isimmediately expanded from a solid body into an annular spaceof equal volume to the steam pipe, whereby its particles areremoved from the centre and thus receive a greater amount ofcentrifugal motion. The entrained water or grease, etc., isthus precipitated against, and flows along the shell of the sep-arator, and is collected in a well of ample proportions at base ofseparator, where it is entirely isolated from the flow of dry steam. S^o-* vmW vtw. Fig. 91, SENTINEL was formerly required for each marine boiler to have asmall valve loaded with a weight to a few pounds per squareinch above the workir , pressure, so that in case of the safetyvalves sticking fast and the gauge being false, an alarm mightbe given when there w^s an excess of pressure. Such valveswere about | inch in ^ameter and sometimes as small as arrangement of a small safety valve attached to a whistlehas been introduced, but with advances in other directionsrelating to safety these specialties are now getting to be onlyknown by name.
