Horner's syndrome. The face of an elderly man showing Horner's syndrome - a group of physical signs that affect one side of the face only as a result of damage to the autonomic nervous system. Horner's syndrome includes a drooping eyelid, con- stricted pupil, and absence of sweat from one side of the face. These signs often result from nerve damage in the lower neck, and may be the first indication of a serious disease. In this case the condition resulted from cancer of the bronchus (a type of lung cancer). Both pupils are constricted here due to the use of opiate drugs to control pain caused by the cancer.
